Ingredients

For the Apple Bread Pudding
  • 4 cups day-old bread cut into cubes
  • 2 cups peeled and diced apples
  • ¼ cup raisins optional
  • cups whole milk
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter melted
  • 2 large eggs beaten
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Vanilla Sauce
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 7×11-inch baking dish.
  2. Combine the bread cubes, apples, and raisins in a large bowl.
  3. Whisk together the milk, brown sugar, melted butter, eggs, cinnamon, and vanilla.
  4. Pour the custard over the bread mixture and gently stir to coat. Let it soak for 10 minutes.
  5. Transfer to the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  6. Bake for 45 minutes, or until golden brown and the center is set.
  7. While the pudding bakes, cook the milk, butter, white sugar, and brown sugar in a saucepan until melted. Simmer for 2–3 minutes, then stir in the vanilla.
  8. Drizzle the warm vanilla sauce over the bread pudding and serve warm.

Notes

Notes

For the best texture, use day old bread so it absorbs the custard without becoming soggy. Firm apples like Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Fuji, or Pink Lady hold their shape well while baking. If you prefer a richer pudding, replace half of the milk with heavy cream. Raisins are optional and can be substituted with chopped pecans or walnuts. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
